Trump . Aaarrggh

Donald Trump Tweet ---
Our great African American President hasn't exactly had a positive impact on the thugs who are so happily and openly destroying Baltimore!

Mr. Trump, you are a disgraceful human being!
Aside - all of the golf organizations who lather and blather over your golf courses should be ashamed! Your courses should be banned from the competitive circuit - around the world!

Privacy - a Thursday Throwback

There was a time when we knew that somebody was watching.

Now, we know they're watching, we just can't see 'em.

Chickens, Turkeys, Mac & Cheese, Ice Cream

5,300,000 chickens are going to be killed, just in Iowa, to try and prevent the spread of the H5N2 virus (bird flu).  Those in the industry say it shouldn’t have very much of an impact on consumers. The industry says there are about 50,000,000 hens laying eggs in Iowa.

And, gobble gobble…2,400,000 turkeys have already been destroyed.  There again, the industry says it should not have very much of an impact, the National Turkey Federation notes that 240,000,000 turkeys are produced annually in the good ol’ US of A.

Wisconsin’s Governor, Scott Walker, who wants to be POTUS, has declared a state of emergency and called out the National Guard to help contain the disease.

Mac and Cheese is going to change colors, but not taste, says Kraft.   That steaming plate of orange goo – which I love – is about to change a little because of pressure from “healthier” competitors.  Kraft says it’s stripping all artificial preservatives and synthetic colors from Kraft Mac & Cheese.

What else?

My favorite ice cream, Blue Bell, has taken all of its products off the shelves because eight people have been affected by a Listeria monocytogenes.

Siberian Fire Sky

For the last couple or three days I was in the Seattle area - the Pacific Northwest - and I recalled a song that Perry Como (yes I'm that old) once sang --   The Bluest Skies I've Ever Seen are in Seattle --

The sky around Seattle hasn't been blue the past few days  ...   and it has nothing to do with volcanic activity...

Wildfires a continent away...in Siberia

Here's a link to the story

WOW!

I recall once covering a story when Mt. Ranier or Mt. Hood blew her stack and we got some drifting volcanic dust in these parts...  this is different.

How do you add up all that stuff in the air to the pollution that belches from factory furnaces.  I'm guessing the fires add a heckuva lot - maybe as much as China's factories - but the fires don't burn all the time, every day of the year.

Still....

Albuquerque Press Club

On this throwback Thursday, some pictures from "doings" involving the Albuquerque Press Club.

Back in the day the news folks from various outlets congregated quite frequently at one of the many haunts that played home to the press club.   Being journalists, we had no money - and the club had no money - so every so often we'd move in the dark of night (chuckle chuckle) to another location.

My first visit to the club was when it was in the basement of what then the Hilton Hotel (now it's the Hotel Andaluz)...then the "club" moved to the hotel at 8th & Central - where we stayed for many years until purchasing the current site in the park near Central and I-25.

Somehow or another I got elected President of the club on two occasions. The first time in the early 1970's, and this news clipping about the second time around.

The biggest function of the year was to host the Gridiron - which we did for many years.  It was the place to be seen - politicians and newstypes - all having a good time - in the same room at the same time.  Oh for those days, again.

Here Paula Maes (now Executive Director of the New Mexico Broadcaster's Association) and I prepare to hand out the "Apes" - the press club version of those golden statues that are given away to movie actors each year.  The Apes were for excellence in a number of categories involving covering the news.

It was a revered statue in the days - a couple of them missing the cigar and a couple toes remain in my home office to this day - and there must be other winners whose statues are collecting dust in the garage, or in the dark deep corners of storage sheds.

I'm not sure such a local journalism competition exists today.

I have no comment about the general quality of news coverage today, or if any of it would win awards (to all rules there are exceptions)!
